Heliconias are perennial herbaceous plants whose height varies from 70 cm to 10 m. The bracts are the most showy organs of a heliconia, generally they are of primary or mixed colors.

They are grouped in the Zingiberales order, and are known abroad as tropical exotics, due to their variety of colors, shapes, sizes and long durability. They are distributed from the Tropic of Cancer to the Tropic of Capricorn, and are mostly typical of tropical and subtropical regions of Central and South America.

The successful cultivation of heliconia depends on an adequate method of propagation and the performance of cultural tasks on time, in order to obtain healthy and good quality plants. The first harvest is obtained between the first seven and ten months after sowing, but the best quality flower is obtained after 12 months. Currently exports of exotic flowers, particularly heliconia, are around 24,000 to 30,000 stems per year, depending on the varieties.
